INDIAN CUSTOMS DUTY LEVELS TO BE REDUCED

The Indian Ministry of Finance is planning to cut the peak rate of customs duty to 25% in the Union Budget for 2003-2004, thus rendering imported goods cheaper. However, it will also increase protection extended to the domestic industries in the case of deserving items.

The Government of India feels that it needs to correct certain anomalies in the duty structure, which lead to higher rates of duty on raw materials as compared to intermediaries and finished products. It also has to adhere to World Trade Organization commitments while introducing changes to the import duty structure.
